Author: MHA/Monday, March 23, 2020/Categories: COVID-19

Governor Walz issued Executive Order 20-14 suspending evictions, lease terminations, and Writs of Recovery for the duration of the peacetime emergency. MHA will be working on your behalf to resolve issues every step of the way.

This afternoon, Governor Walz issued Executive Order 20-14 (attached) suspending evictions, lease terminations, and Writs of Recovery for the duration of the peacetime emergency. Two exceptions exist to this Executive Order:

  1. Eviction actions and lease terminations are permissible where the tenant seriously endangers the safety of other residents
  2. Eviction actions and lease terminations are permissible for violations of Minnesota Statutes 2019, section 504B.171, subdivision (specified criminal activity)

Nothing in the Executive Order relieves a tenant’s obligation to pay rent. The Governor stated at the press conference that people who are able to continue to pay their rent should do so during this time. The Governor stated in the press conference that “there will be problems and we will clean in up after it’s done.” Residents have also been advised to work with their property manager on a repayment plan.

Minnesota Housing Finance Agency (MHFA) has issued a summary and FAQ of the Executive Order
