Advanced De-Escalation

In Partnership with and Presented by: People Inc.

Sometimes a situation becomes potentially dangerous regardless of how skillful a practitioner is in nonverbal and verbal de-escalation. These situations require skillful management and safety becomes the primary concern. It may include calling for help, but should still be framed as de-escalation, as the situation could calm at any time as the stress respond subsides. We’ll take a close look at setting limits without them sounding like threats and explore how to rebuild the relationship after the incident. The class concludes with some notes on self-care post crisis and the importance of a debriefing protocol.

Learning Objectives:

  • Set appropriate limits when de-escalation isn’t working
  • Name basic protective strategies when a situation becomes potentially violent
  • Look at strategies for rebuilding the relationship after a crisis
  • Recognize the importance of self-care after a crisis in the context of a debriefing protocol
